Manage nameservers

What this does

Nameservers control which DNS service answers for your domain — where it points for websites, email, and anything else. On a domain's detail page, the "Manage" tab shows the domain's current nameservers and, for domains registered at Spaceship, lets you change them without leaving Euphyr.

How to do it

1. Open a domain from your portfolio and go to the "Manage" tab.
2. Find the "Nameservers" panel on the right. It lists the domain's current nameservers.
3. Click "Edit" (shown for Spaceship-registered domains once Spaceship is connected).
4. Type your nameserver hostnames, one per row — for example ns1.example.com. Use "Add nameserver" for more (2 to 12 total), or the "X" to remove a row.
5. Click "Save". To switch back to Spaceship's own DNS instead, click "Use Spaceship default".

Changes can take time to spread across the internet, so the new nameservers may not take effect everywhere immediately.

Common questions

Why is there no "Edit" button on my domain?

Editing nameservers from Euphyr currently works for domains registered at Spaceship, with the Spaceship integration connected. If the domain is at another registrar, the panel shows its current nameservers as read-only. If it's a Spaceship domain but you haven't connected Spaceship, the panel shows a "Connect Spaceship" link — open "Settings", connect Spaceship, then come back.

What's the difference between custom nameservers and "Use Spaceship default"?

Custom nameservers point your domain at whatever DNS service you run or use elsewhere (you enter the hostnames). "Use Spaceship default" hands DNS back to Spaceship's own nameservers — pick this if you want Spaceship to manage your DNS again.

How many nameservers can I set?

Between 2 and 12. Most setups use 2 to 4. Each must be a full hostname like ns1.example.com, and you can't list the same one twice.

How current are the nameservers shown?

For Spaceship domains, the nameservers come straight from Spaceship — they're recorded when you sync your Spaceship portfolio, and a change you make here shows immediately. To pull the latest from Spaceship, sync your Spaceship portfolio again from "Settings". For domains at other registrars, the panel shows the last-known nameservers and is read-only.

When it doesn't work

• "Enter at least 2 nameservers." — A domain needs at least two nameservers. Add a second row before saving.
• "...isn't a valid nameserver hostname." — One of the rows isn't a full hostname. Use something like ns1.example.com — no spaces, no http://, no trailing path.
• "Spaceship allows 5 nameserver changes per domain every 5 minutes. Try again soon." — You've changed this domain's nameservers several times in a short window. Wait a few minutes and try again.
• "Connect Spaceship in Settings first." — The Spaceship integration isn't connected. Open "Settings", connect Spaceship, then retry.
• "Spaceship rejected those credentials. Reconnect the integration in Settings." — Your saved Spaceship key is no longer valid. In "Settings", disconnect Spaceship and reconnect with a fresh key that includes nameserver write access.
• "Nameserver management is only available for Spaceship-registered domains right now." — The domain isn't held at Spaceship. Change its nameservers from the registrar where it's registered.
