Register a dropping domain

Updated 2026-07-16

What this does

When a domain you're watching is available — either it just dropped and our checks confirmed it's unregistered, or it was already unregistered when you added it — a Register button appears on the watchlist detail page, and in the "Action" column when you switch your watchlist to table view. Clicking it opens a dialog that checks availability with the registrar you pick, blocks premium-priced names so you can't accidentally spend thousands on one, and registers the domain to that registrar's account at the standard price after you confirm.

Euphyr can register through any of these registrars once you've connected them in Settings → Integrations:

  • Spaceship — uses the default contact you saved in Settings.
  • Dynadot — uses your Dynadot account's default contacts.
  • name.com — uses your name.com account's default contacts.

If only one registrar is connected the Register button skips the picker and goes straight to that registrar's dialog. When multiple are connected the button opens a small Via Spaceship / Via Dynadot / Via name.com dropdown so you can pick per registration.

How to do it

  1. Open your watchlist from the left sidebar and click into the domain you want, or switch the watchlist to table view where the Register button shows in the "Action" column.
  2. Make sure the status shows "available" — the Register button appears once our checks confirm the domain is unregistered, whether it just dropped or was already available when you added it.
  3. Click Register. If you have more than one registrar connected, pick which one to register through. The dialog asks that registrar whether the domain is available.
  4. If the domain is available at the standard price, the dialog shows a green checkmark, the yearly price, and "Available at standard registration price."
  5. Click Confirm purchase. The registrar registers the domain for 1 year with auto-renew off and Whois privacy on where the registry supports it.
  6. A toast confirms the registration was submitted. The domain appears in your registrar account within a minute or two.

If Euphyr couldn't update its own records straight after the registrar accepted the buy, you'll instead see a warning toast: Registered at <registrar>, but Euphyr couldn't update its records. The domain reappears in your portfolio within a few minutes once the next sync runs. Do not click `Register` again — the registrar already charged you and a second click would double-charge.

Common questions

What if I haven't connected any registrar?

The Register button is replaced with a Connect a registrar button on the watchlist detail page. Click it — Euphyr takes you straight to Settings → Integrations. Connect Spaceship, Dynadot, or name.com, then come back to the watchlist row and the real Register button is there.

Which registrar's contacts get used?

Whichever registrar you pick uses its own account-level default contacts:

  • For Spaceship, you pick the default contact in Settings → Integrations → Spaceship → Set default contact. The dialog echoes "Using contact: …" before you confirm.
  • For Dynadot, the registration uses the default registrant / admin / tech / billing contacts you set in your Dynadot dashboard. The dialog shows "Uses your Dynadot account default contacts."
  • For name.com, the registration uses your name.com account's default contacts. Same dialog hint as Dynadot.

If a registrar's defaults need updating, do it in that registrar's dashboard, not in Euphyr.

What if the domain is priced as premium?

The dialog shows a red "Premium domain — registration blocked." message along with the price the registrar returned. Euphyr blocks premium registrations on purpose so a single misclick can't buy a $10,000 name. If you really want a premium domain, register it directly from your registrar account.

What about expensive but non-premium TLDs like .ai or .io?

For name.com registrations Euphyr enforces an extra $100 USD ceiling on standard (non-premium) registrations. If the registrar quotes you above $100 — even when the name isn't flagged premium — Euphyr blocks the purchase and tells you the exact price. You can still buy directly on name.com if you want the name at that price.

Dynadot and Spaceship don't have this extra ceiling — their own premium flag is the only block. If you want a hard cap there too, watch for the price line in the confirm dialog before clicking Confirm purchase.

What happens to the domain in Euphyr after I register it?

Once the registrar accepts the registration, Euphyr automatically:

  • Flips the domain from your watchlist into your portfolio.
  • Marks it as verified.
  • Tags it with the registrar you used (so the portfolio card shows the registrar logo and the detail page Overview shows a "Synced from" row with that registrar's name).

Pricing, valuation, and similar sales analysis run the same way they do for any portfolio domain.

Can I change auto-renew or privacy after registration?

Yes — Euphyr only sets the initial state. After registration you can flip auto-renew on, change Whois privacy, set nameservers, or transfer the domain directly in the registrar's account.

How many domains can I register each day?

Private beta accounts can submit up to three registration attempts per day. Failed attempts count toward this safety limit so repeated provider errors cannot create unexpected charges.

When it doesn't work

  • `Connect a registrar` button instead of `Register` — No registrar is connected. Click the button — Euphyr takes you to Settings → Integrations. Connect Spaceship, Dynadot, or name.com, then come back.
  • `Registered at <registrar>, but Euphyr couldn't update its records.` — The registrar accepted the buy and charged you, but Euphyr's own record-keeping failed for a moment. The domain reappears in your portfolio within a few minutes once the next sync runs. Do NOT click Register again — that would double-charge you at the registrar.
  • "Pick a default Spaceship contact in Settings before registering." — You picked Spaceship but haven't selected a default contact yet. Open Settings → Integrations, click the Spaceship Set default contact button, choose one, then retry. Only applies to Spaceship — Dynadot and name.com use their own account defaults.
  • "Premium domain — registration blocked." — The registrar reports this as premium-priced. Euphyr blocks it on purpose. Register directly on the registrar's site if you want it.
  • "Standard registration price ($X USD) exceeds Euphyr's $100 safety ceiling." — Only for name.com. The registrar quoted a high price even though it isn't flagged premium. Buy on name.com directly if you accept the price.
  • "… reports the domain isn't available for registration." — Someone registered it before you. Refresh the watchlist row; if our drop check is still stale you'll see this until the next daily check runs.
  • "… couldn't charge your account." — Top up your registrar balance and try again. The domain is still available unless someone else grabbed it in the meantime.
  • "… rejected those credentials." — Your saved API credentials are no longer valid. Open Settings → Integrations, disconnect that registrar, then reconnect with a fresh key.
  • "… rate limit hit." — Wait a minute and click Register again.
  • "Daily registration limit reached. Try again tomorrow." — Your account has submitted three registration attempts today. Register directly with your registrar if the purchase cannot wait.
  • "Domain registration is temporarily paused." — Euphyr has temporarily stopped registrar purchases as a safety measure. No registration request was sent and your registrar was not charged.
  • "Couldn't reach …" — The registrar was unreachable or slow. Check your internet connection and try again in a few seconds.
  • "Availability check failed: …" — The availability check couldn't complete (network glitch on Euphyr's side or a transient browser issue). Close the dialog and click Register again; if it keeps failing, refresh the page and retry.
